Article Abstract:

Competition to join the UK's 14 University Royal Naval Units (URNUs) is fierce, with more than 100 students competing for each place. Selection procedures are described as ferocious, with students being tested for interpersonal and leadership skills over a three-day period. URNU students learn fire fighting, damage control and boat handling skills as well as navigational and seamanship skills. Students are provided with transport, food and uniform as well as being paid for attending compulsory weekly drill meetings and weekend and fortnight-long deployments.

Should a student hall need to have a licence?

Article Abstract:

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) and the Standing Committee of Principals have rejected Government proposals to include student residences in a licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation. The CVCP argues that removing the exemption from registration currently enjoyed by university-owned accommodation would increase costs and bureaucracy and place students under greater financial pressure. However the National Union of Students argues that halls of residence are houses of multiple occupancy and should be subject to licensing.
