Why learning to destroy is learning to enjoy

Article Abstract:

Some engineering professors have found the television program 'Robot Wars' has started to influence not only students studying engineering but has encouraged younger people to consider engineering as a career. It also seems to appeal to female students. The professors point out they would rather their students be involved in developing more productive machines, such as solar cars. The 'Robot Wars' programme is produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation Ltd. It features eight different robots each week, made by members of the public, which fight each other to find a winner.

Well armed for a career

Article Abstract:

At some British universities women undergraduates account for 40% of the Officer Training Corps (OTC) which remain a popular pursuit, despite being banned from a number of freshers' week recruitment meetings by the students unions. Around 20% of officer cadets at the universities will go on to officer training following their graduation. The women are expected to play a full active role in the OTC. Once a student has joined the OTC they must attend for one weekend and one evening per week. They do get paid for weekends. The OTC also offers a number of social meetings.
