Cost and image taking toll

Article Abstract:

Leading figures in the field of physics have warned that a mass cull of physics departments is imminent unless the subject receives urgent financial assistance. The past 10 years has seen 30% of physics departments in UK universities close down, and the Institute of Physics has aired its concerns that more will close unless more funding is found. According to figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the number of physics undergraduates in the UK fell to 8,635 in 2002-2003, vs 9,030 in 2000-2001, signalling that despite a string of initiatives designed to promote the study of physics, schoolchildren still do not see it as an exciting option.
