Access initiatives reach an impasse

Article Abstract:

Universities are failing to increase recruitment of students from disadvantaged backgrounds and are failing to cut drop-out rates, according to the annual performance indicators for the sector from the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Figures show that in 2004-05, 86.7 percent of young entrants to full-time degree courses were from the state sector, slightly down vs the previous year, and the number young entrants to full-time degree courses from lower social classes is down to 28.2 percent, vs 28.6 percent in 2003-04.

Britons spurning postgrad research

Article Abstract:

Universities are struggling to find enough UK students for postgraduate places and the small rise in students going on to postgraduate research is accounted for by overseas students, according to the Patterns of Higher Education Institutions in the UK report from Universities UK (UUK). Between 1995 and 2005, institutions almost doubled intake of students from outside Europe.
