Architects of the great depression

Article Abstract:

Many of the mental health problems which are accepted nowadays as being widespread first came to the attention of doctors and the general public as a result of efforts by pharmaceutical manufacturers to publicize them. Ciba-Geigy, for example, has publicized Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in order to boost sales of clomipramine, while Upjohn has backed research into Panic Disorder. It is very unlikely that this situation could be resolved by evidence-based medicine, as only the leading pharmaceutical companies would be able to fund the necessary randomized control trials.

The last great liberal

Article Abstract:

Liberal philosopher Isaiah Berlin believed that communists, socialists and social democrats all perceive freedom as self-realisation, while liberal freedom should incorporate non-interference without intimidation. Berlin felt that political authority over individuals should be limited. He also felt that equality of liberty was fundamental to liberal morality and he perceived people as being not free if they were under-educated or poor. Berlin considered the core values of social democracy, justice, equality and liberty, to be contradictory.

A great thinker but an ordinary man

Article Abstract:

Ann Oakley explains the background to her recent book 'Man and Wife.' She is the daughter of the influential social policy analyst and advisor, Richard Titmuss, who died in 1973. She originally considered writing a typical biography of her father but, after being left writings from her mother, the scope of the book widened to include an examination of gender issues looking at why women, such as her mother, may disappear into family life whilst it is men who dominate the public sphere.
