The eye of the tiger

Article Abstract:

Former Vice Chancellor of Hong Kong University Wang Gungwu is confident that the staff and students of his former university are well prepared for the change in leadership. He suggests that in the short-term people may react by becoming less adventurous in their work and less open with their opinions. Wang hopes that the new political leaders in Britain will help to improve the relationship between the UK and China. He suggests that the people in Hong Kong should worry less about the political changes which they are unable to change. Wang worked in the executive council prior to 1992.

History's bigger picture

Article Abstract:

Global history is the theme of the Anglo-American Conference of Historians being held in London, England, in the week of Jun. 30, 1997. Institute of Historical Research director Patrick O'Brien explains that the renewed interest in global history stems partly from historians' wish to make sense of the huge amount of material now available via computer. Britain's interest in world history declined with the loss of its empire, but global historian William McNeill suggests that Europe's growing interest in global history is the result of the continent's relative decline in power.

Nice little earners

Article Abstract:

Students who have been successful in a job or who have won large sums of money, before taking a place at university, talk of gaining sense of individual achievement. Wealthy students may find it difficult to sustain their studies without the motivation of having to find work once they have graduated. Universities which have always had a number of wealthy students find they tend to stay together when they are not studying. Older students are sometimes viewed by younger students as being too hardworking.
