Article Abstract:

Access to a university education should be open to all young people in Africa and cost should not be a barrier, claims the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Nearly all universities in sub-Saharan Africa are suffering from poor funding, poor staff retention, overcrowding and government interference, with universities now required to tackle the challenges or face extinction. The decline of many universities can be attributed to government intervention, such as by the appointment of civil servants as university leaders. A World Conference on Higher Education will take place in 1998 in Paris, France.

Kenya sends graduate aid

Article Abstract:

Central African countries, around the Great Lakes, are recruiting graduate workers from Kenya. Some aid agencies question the role of the graduates who will be working in areas where civil war has closed colleges and schools. The countries, such as Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are dependent on foreign aid. Congo President Laurent Kabila has asked for 10,000 professional workers. Observers point out Kenya has too many graduates in education and arts subjects whilst experiencing a shortfall of other professionals, such as doctors, architects and engineers.
