Return of the old school ties

Article Abstract:

University mathematics and engineering departments have expressed concern in recent years over the level of university entrants' skills yet professor of mathematics education Margaret Brown points out that they have made no attempt to understand the changes that have been taking place in schools. One problem is that pressure on academics to do research and brush up their teaching skills leaves them no time for A-level examination boards or school-based subject association conferences. However some academics, particularly mathematicians, appear to want to rebuild the bridges between universities and the schools.

Warwick bares all on air

Article Abstract:

Sir Brian Follett is confident that Warwick University, England, of which he is vice-chancellor, will come out of a seven-part fly-on-the-wall radio series pretty well. Brian King, who produced the series which begins on Radio 4 on Jan. 9, 1997, was allowed virtually unlimited access to record on the Warwick campus over an eight-month period in 1996. The series, an impressionistic portrait of life at Warwick rather than a documentary, provides intriguing glimpses of such closed areas of academic life as senate meetings and the process of student admissions.

Calling on deaf ears: as church congregations shrink and fewer people enter the ministry, some denominations are sharing the training of their clergy

Article Abstract:

Queen's College, an ecumencial theological training establishment, offers courses for students training for the ministry. The Church of England, Methodists and United Reform churches use the same part time courses and there is a move towards training within the same colleges, such as Queen's College. There are also plans to develop future ministerial training across the denominations.
