Seeing off the school bullies

Article Abstract:

Traditional supporters of comprehensive education, a system that has been in existence in Britain for 30 years, will examine the comprehensive ideal in a series of lectures at the dept. of educational studies at Oxford University, England, in Jan. 1996. Dept. head Richard Pring feels that the assumption that comprehensive education has gone wrong needs to be questioned. He admits that not everything about comprehensive schools is ideal, but argues that they have been extremely successful for many young people. The idea of comprehensive schools specialising in such areas as music or drama is gaining considerable support.

Content with a starring role

Article Abstract:

UK library schools are undergoing changes as students learn to tackle new technology. Librarians are trained in information studies departments. Students are faced with changes in the job market as private libraries expand and public sector services contract. Sheffield University, England, has pioneered information studies and has received a high rating from the national accreditation authorities. The development of computer assisted learning will bring further changes for librarians.

Uncowed bearer of bad news

Article Abstract:

Richard Lacey is a microbiologist from the UK who is a consultant with the National Health Service and also visiting professor at the University of Leeds, England. He predicted an increase in cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in the UK in 1996, linked to an epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and there has been concern in 1996 over such cases. He argues that more cases are likely to emerge since the disease has a long incubation period.
