The borrowers' life on the shelf

Article Abstract:

UK university libraries are coming under significant financial pressure because publishers are increasing prices by between 10% and 15% a year. Academics are responding by establishing transnational electronic publishing initiatives such as SPARC, which will make high quality peer-reviewed academic journals available at a much lower price than that charged by commercial publishers. Fred Friend, director of scholarly communications at University College London, believes that university libraries could also reduce their costs by cooperating more extensively.

The master's voice

Article Abstract:

Many people find the work of Rembrandt fascinating, according to Ernst van de Wetering, professor of art history at Amsterdam University, Netherlands. He feels that form was as important as content for Rembrandt. The artist was greatly concerned with improvement and invention, and took innovative approaches to dealing with light, structure and composition. There are many different elements to Rembrandt's work, and studying it can become an addiction.
