The binary line that divides the old and new

Article Abstract:

Contrasting pension schemes have proved a problem in the merger of higher education institutes with old universities, and in the merger of nursing colleges with universities in Britain. Academics in the old universities belong to the USS while college staff belong to the less generous TSS. The problem has been solved by allowing transferring college academics to remain in the TSS and admitting new recruits to the USS. In the case of transferring nursing college staff belonging to the National Health Service pension scheme (NHPS), the National Health Service has made basic transfer payments.

She who makes holy men fume

Article Abstract:

Taslima Nasreen is an author from Bangladesh who lives in Sweden following death threats in her native land. She faced a two-year prison sentence after demonstrations by Muslims, and she contacted Amnesty International in order to seek asylum. The subjects she tackles include the oppression of women, humanism and justice. She has been criticised for using death threats to gain publicity and for too simplistic a view of the position of women, but there is evidence that women are oppressed in Bangladesh.
