Cutting the fashion world

Article Abstract:

Goldsmith College London, England, Professor of Communication Angela McRobbie suggests the government should have a role in helping to fund young fashion designers. She points out it is very difficult for self-employed designers to become successful. Whilst the large chain stores favour putting their designers on freelance contracts rather than giving them permanent employment. Royal College of Art Professor of Fashion Wendy Dagworthy points out fashion students need to be aware of business risks. But she is very supportive of designers setting up their own businesses.

Cool water treatment for a centre of concern

Article Abstract:

British Members of the European Parliament are being questioned about the activities and value of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) by vice-chancellors, who believe the European laboratory receives excessive funding. The JRC accounts for 7% of the EU's Fifth Framework Programme Budget at about Ecu1 billion, and has failed to reduce its dependency on direct funding as proposed in 1987. The vice chancellors would like to make the JRC more accountable so that its research output can be evaluated.
