Home is where the Foyer is

Article Abstract:

The Foyer Federation has been working with young British people in need since 1992, and has helped around 15,000 people. The Federation has been making links with universities and further education colleges to increase access to education for those living in foyers. It already has made links with local authorities, voluntary groups, the private sector and the government. The foundation provides young people, aged around 16-25 years, with a home and training for a job. The young people live in foyers whilst they complete their training. Housing benefit pays their rent.

Rememberer of loves past

Article Abstract:

Anthony Minghella, writer and director of 'The English Patient' which has received 12 Oscar nominations, explains that he was not aiming to get to Hollywood when he resigned from his lecturing job at Hull University, England. He simply wanted to work with theatre companies that had been interested in him as a playwright. Minghella reveals that he found solace from being in a room on his own during the 10 years he spent as an academic. He enjoys writing and directing films since the life combines periods of uproar with periods of quiet sitting alone in a room.

On your marks for the clearing handicap

Article Abstract:

UK universities will be admitting students following publication of exam results in Aug 1996. More students are likely to be accepted by their first choice in 1996 since exam results have improved. The remainder will use the clearing process. Candidates select six universities rather than eight as they did previously. More students are deciding to study close to home and more are deciding to earn a living rather than studying, showing the increased importance of financial considerations.
