The levy is for turning round

Article Abstract:

The number of students studying at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom has increased dramatically over the last few years, so that even though the government has increased the overall amount of funding, each student now receives 25% less than they did in 1989. One mechanism to demonstrate the detrimental effects of the lack of government funding is to set up a deficiency levy, which will demonstrate to the public and the government the underfunding in graphical terms.

Loan wagon in need of repair

Article Abstract:

Graduate fees and student loans are commonly used terms in education institutions within the United Kingdom, although the current debates should be focused on the impact of these financial arrangements on the operation of the higher education sector. Any financial scheme adopted should be easy to administer, fair and equitable. Privately educated people at infant, junior and senior schools, should continue to pay for their education at universities and colleges.

Poor relation deserves front-page treatment too

Article Abstract:

The further education colleges of the United Kingdom have not received as much attention from the press during the Conservative government's repeated reductions in education expenditure, even though the annual capital allocations will be cut by 63% by the year 2000, and revenue costs per student will be down by 16%. College fees are already paid by the student, and very little is provided for maintenance because of the reduced discretionary award system.
