Violent cults run riot on campuses

Article Abstract:

A number of Nigerian university students have been killed in worsening clashes between rival cults over the past two years. Two students died in clashes between the rival Black Axe and Eiye cults at Lagos State University in Feb. 1997, while a student was shot dead in violent clashes between the same two groups at the neighbouring Federal University of Lagos. The secret societies have been allowed to grow almost unchecked by the university authorities, some of which are using cult members to terrorise students protesting about such excesses as official corruption.

When demands are a part of education

Article Abstract:

University students and lecturers in some African nations are objecting to conditions sometimes violently, such as in the Cote d'Ivorie. Some students are not protesting against the lack of educational funding but are involved in political protests, such as in the former Zaire. The francophone countries of Africa have been suffering from the devaluation of the CFA Franc which reduced funding for higher education. The francophone countries set up their own universities for students who could not attend a university in France.
