Proxy wars amid the groves

Article Abstract:

The story behind Arnold Toynbee's resignation from the Koraes chair of modern Greek and Byzantine history at Kings's College, London, in 1924, has relevance to modern issues of academic freedom. Toynbee's denunciation of the treatment of Muslim minorities by the Greeks in Asian lands angered the Greek donors of the chair, who had perceived the chair as a means of promoting Greek propaganda. The ensuing row forced Toynbee's resignation. A similar situation could be repeated today, as foreign governments and individuals still maintain chairs with the intention of gaining academic legitimacy for their causes.

Students at the University of Baghdad are having to sleep on classroom floors because the occupying forces and Baghdad's homeless have taken over the university's accommodation blocks. The issue is causing serious friction between the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) and the university authorities, with university president Musa al-Musawi stating that the university has 5,000 students that require accommodation but the CPA has provided no help in housing them.
