Article Abstract:

The UK Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) is calling for a restructuring of the way higher education is funded in the UK. The HEFCE is concerned that students are faced with a disparate and complex education service, and a systematic development of higher education could be hampered. The Association of Colleges is opposed to measures hindering partnerships with universities. They argue that allowing a range of links between colleges and universities is the best way to respond to local needs.

The Enterprise in Higher Education (EHE) initiative has been applied to many disciplines, including philosophy. The EHE project emphasises the skills students have acquired while at college which will be useful to them in the world of work. Some observers feel that philosophy students gain many skills which are used atwork including the ability to reason, co-operation and ethical viewpoints.

Neuroscientists working on the theory of consciousness may be near to a discovery of how physical and mental sensations are linked. One scientist believes it is a part of human biology, like digestion or growth. Another thinks that consciousness cannot be quantified, and that there is more to it than just the right commands.
