Time for a French revolution

Article Abstract:

Political and social life in France has for many years been dominated by the very small elite of people who have studied at the grandes ecoles. In particular, those who have attended the science-oriented Ecole Polytechnique and the law-oriented Ecole Nationale d'Administration are held in very high regard. However, there are now indications that this approach to higher education is beginning to fail. It is possible that the grandes ecoles system encourages cronyism, rather than competence, and that those who have studied at these institutions have for too long enjoyed immunity from competition and accountability.

Blindness in Gaza

Article Abstract:

There are now around 10 higher education institutions in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza, of which seven are designated as universities. There are around 30,000 students, and all establishments have had to rely on funding from tuition fees and outside sources. In the light of the recent peace agreement, higher education will become even more important than ever. Education will become the responsibility of the Palestinian authority, and it will be vital to develop a system which can produce the necessary skills to allow the Palestinians to move towards self-administration.

Blasts in a legal minefield

Article Abstract:

Higher education establishments in France are under increasing pressure from judicial action. The 1984 law which covers such establishments, forbids universities to 'select' its students. All students with the baccalaureat completed may attend any course at any university. The law also forbids any university to make students contribute to funding of their courses. Details of several cases brought against French universities are included.
