Barber surgeons of the new age

Article Abstract:

Doctors in the UK take six years to train in traditional medical schools, followed by another preregistration year. This is expensive and, in view of regular developments in medicine, could become longer and more expensive if left unchanged. It is suggested that rather than spend so much time covering very many aspects of medicine, students should specialise earlier rather than later. With recent legal actions, hospitals are keen to use only very specialised and experienced staff in very narrow fields, and for such specialists the training they received in many other areas is of no value to them. Some doctors will need to continue to have a wide training.

Expert lessons

Article Abstract:

The UK Civil Procedure Rules 1999 include measures concerning the use of expert witnesses in court. The Rules, which represent an attempt to match the cost of legal proceedings more closely to individual cases, require that expert witnesses should be used only where their contribution is really necessary. Judges may prevent the calling of expert witnesses or they may require the two parties to use a single expert. Parties may also now submit questions to expert witnesses used by opposing parties. The answers will become part of the expert's evidence.
