Beaten by the big stick

Article Abstract:

Law and order was very strongly represented in the political agenda that brought Mrs Thatcher to power as UK prime minister in 1979. Since then the Conservatives have been very active. First they improved the situation regarding the police, prisons and punishment. As the figures on crime did not react to this enormous expenditure they changed direction by putting the onus on the individual citizen and general social forces. This has had the dual effect of removing blame for the crime statistics from the government and cutting the escalating costs of further improvements. The government refuses to admit any connection between increased crime and other factors such as unemployment.

Author as mirror to the soul

Article Abstract:

Lord Weidenfeld commissioned deputy editor of The Spectator Simon Heffer to produce a new biography of Thomas Carlyle to coincide with the 1995 second centenary of his birth. The prose and doctrine of Carlyle may be popular with modern young people, since it was directed to the young people of Carlyle's time. He died in 1881 at 86. His Frederick the Great in eight volumes is perhaps his greatest achievement but he was very interested in bringing belief to the great and poor majority. He very strongly rejected the godless although he was reluctant to discuss religion, believing that action was slowed by too many words.
