'Because it is hard to say anything definite about standards, it's intriguing to be told that in one area things are clear. People are getting cleverer'

Article Abstract:

While there is argument about the relative standards of various aspects of education, it has been noted that, since the 1980s, people have been doing better and better at IQ tests. It is contended that it should be a priority to try and understand why this improvement has been happening so that we can try and affect the same level of improvement in other areas, such as mathematical skills.

'A successful developer complained that all the architecture students spent their time designing opera houses... but how many do we build?'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the social role of architects and the perception architects have of themselves as artists. It is argued that schools of architecture and the students they teach need to learn about people, how they use the buildings and the place the building will have in the surrounding community they design before they start to make their artistic statements.

'If there are clear objective rules for selection and grading, should we worry about whether men's and women's results are identically distributed?'

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the ways in which male-female differences will influence success in certain degrees are examined. It is argued that we should be looking deeper than statistics in order to examine bias and that other issues should be taken into consideration.
