The importance of being earnest

Article Abstract:

The term 'political correctness' was first used in the US in the 1960's-70's. It is now used heavily in US education, and refers to concepts such as feminism, the rights of gays and ethnic minority issues. Most US universities include elements of non-Western ideas in their curricula, and actively recruit students and academics from ethnic groups. Many Americans from these groups have not had access to higher education, and efforts are being made to redress the balance.
