Climbing ladders to cash and kudos

Article Abstract:

Many Further Education (FE) institutions are operating applied research projects in such fields as technical and vocational training to meet industry requirements. Since FE colleges are no longer controlled by local authorities, research is seen as a method of increasing the status of the colleges, increasing finance, enhancing the quality of teaching, making new connections with industry and raising staff development. The three main components of FE research are educational research, market research and the relation institutional development and research according to a survey of four FE colleges conducted by the Further Education Unit (FEU). The survey also revealed a close relation between research and developing business which saw colleges' research projects receiving substantial funding.

Enter stage left: an acting degree

Article Abstract:

The City University has agreed to oversee a BA course in acting at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. There are other courses available, but this course puts emphasis on the practical side of acting. Elements include voice exercises, rehearsals and movement classes. Assessment includes an essay on a particular character portrayed by the student and a project. Students will gain wider experience and access to ordinary grants instead of the rare discretionary grants given for most drama courses.
