Swings and roundabouts

Article Abstract:

The annual conference of the Political Studies Association took place in Apr 1992 in Belfast. It took place before the UK General Election, and much of the discussion centred around the Labour Party and the ideals of social democracy. Another session looked at the way political parties communicate with the electorate during election campaigns. The Labour Party's interest in constitutional reform was felt to be a positive asset. In view of the election result it was felt the discussions at the conference had been useful.

French press lacks baronial archetypes

Article Abstract:

Newspaper owners have tended to be more business-like in the UK and the US compared to France where owning a newspaper has been seen as a luxury. French newspapers have been associated with political influence and 40 of 46 newspapers in Paris France had clear political allegiances in 1914. Spending on advertising has been higher in the UK and US compared to France, and French distribution costs are higher since France urbanized later and more people tend to live in rural areas.
