Beware the red herring in pursuit of excellence

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the contention that the UK government's drive for critical mass in research overlooks many subtleties of innovation are examined. It is argued that given the available evidence, the drive in the government's white paper on higher education released in January 2003 to reward the critical mass of research rather than the quality of research is flawed, and if the aim is to create better returns on research investment, then a better policy would be one that rewards collaboration between departments rather than driving them apart.

Don't concentrate, it's bad for research health

Article Abstract:

Reducing funding for university departments rated 4 and below in the United Kingdom's research assessment exercise is sorely misguided and will only serve to stifle progress. It is argued that while the best university departments must, of course, be strongly supported if they are to remain internationally competitive, this support should not come at the expense of smaller, less highly rated university departments, otherwise the development of a rich research base will be stifled.

Article Abstract:

The director of Save British Science analyses the Government's spending review and 10-year framework for science in the UK. It is conceded that the spending review did contain some good news for science research but it is criticised for lacking any serious new investment for the recruitment and retention of the best minds.
