Beyond pickled cucumber

Article Abstract:

The demand for higher education in Poland is growing but many sectors are not do not attract sufficient students, such as physics. The government have introduced student loans to help pay for the increased demand from the large number of 17-19 year olds. Students who gain very high marks will not have to pay back their loans, which are valued at around 40% of average wages. Some 16% of students are educated at 137 private universities. Several have established links with Western institutions. The European Union plans to support some training schemes. Polish GDP is rising by nearly 7% each year.

Politicians' words and work are out of kilter

Article Abstract:

A Liberal Democrat working peer and spokesperson on Northern Ireland calls for more authentic discourse in politics as a result of the current growth in mistrust in politicians. It is acknowledged that pessimism is probably the best response to the current failure of the failure of rhetoric to meet reality, but it is also pointed out that the acknowledgement of Prime Minister Tony Blair that spin needs to be abandoned in favour of more substantive dialogue marks a glimmer of hope.

The likely victory of incumbent Aleksander Kwasniewski in the Polish presidential election is discussed. The huge demand for higher education in Poland and the effect of Kwasniewski's false claim of a masters degree are examined.
