Article Abstract:

Gerhard Schroeder, German Chancellor, and Germany's 16 regional prime ministers have signed a Euro1.9 billion agreement for investment in the Excellence Initiative, which, over the course of the next six years, is designed to revitalise Germany's stagnating university system through the creation of a number of elite institutions. The federal government is expected to provide three quarters of the funding for the initiative, with the remainder coming from the individual states.
