Bosom buddies

Article Abstract:

Women university students may expect their female supervisors to take on a particular role, such as mother figure or as an older sister. Some female supervisors have complained feminist students often do not expect to have their work criticised by their supervisors as they see it as an expression of power. Female supervisors sometimes need to remind their students they have to mark all work objectivity even if they are friends. The nature of the relationship between a supervisor and student can become very close which has proved difficult for some lesbian supervisors and their students.

Guide to the moral maze

Article Abstract:

Glasgow University Institute of Law and Ethics Director Shelia McLean is adamant that people have the right not to suffer from discrimination and not to have unwanted medical intervention. She agrees with euthanasia if it is the specific wish of the person involved. McLean has seen the interest in medical ethics increase rapidly from her first course on the subject in 1976. Part of her work includes examining UK laws concerning medical consent for the government. McLean points out that advances in genetics have brought some unanticipated ethical problems.
