CNAA: case for the preservation

Article Abstract:

The UK government is threatening to dismantle the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), set up in the 60's to confirm and guarantee the quality of the education and qualifications offered by polytechnics and higher education colleges. The government wants to stop the CNAA because it believes the council's work is complete. With the government's pledge to increase higher education numbers, however, there will be many changes, diversifications and perhaps improvements. The changes will necessitate the implementation of regulations already provided by the CNAA.

End of tenure, start of tender

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken in 1995 provides evidence to support the argument for a fundamental restructuring of Britain's higher education system involving a drastic reshaping of the contract between academic staff and institutions. Under the new framework, universities and colleges would consist essentially of senior managers and administrative staff whose primary role would be the commissioning of courses and programmes. Academic staff would be self-employed and would be free to bid for the provision and delivery of courses at any number of universities and colleges.

Close encounters of a higher kind

Article Abstract:

UK colleges of further education (FE) are collaborating with universities to provide courses at degree level. This can allow colleges to provide courses that are not otherwise provided by the university. Bishop Burton College, England, was set up in 1954 as an agricultural college, and has developed a partnership with the University of Humberside. Colleges can create opportunities through niche marketing and this can benefit everyone involved.
