Cambridge debate rages on

Article Abstract:

Questions about the future direction of Cambridge University brought an unusually high turnout of academics - 35 - to a three-hour debate on the results of a ballot on governance reforms held in January 2003. The debate saw agreement on a number of issues; changes in governance of the university are vital; it would be a good idea if there were external members on the governing council; the vice-chancellor should have the powers to make certain decisions; and that the university's future is at stake. In the January ballot, proposals to allow external members on the university's governing board and to give the vice-chancellor more power were both defeated, a result that Sir Alec Broers, vice-chancellor of Cambridge, claims damaged the standing of the university and the credibility of the vice chancellor.

Stalled reforms are not cause for celebration

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the defeat of elements of the latest set of reforms to the constitution of Cambridge University are examined from the viewpoint that the defeated elements, which related to the authority of the vice-chancellor and the placement of three outsiders on the university council, were misconstrued and should be reconsidered if the university is to avoid losing public respect.
