'I've gone places others haven't'

Article Abstract:

Lesley McCulloch, Scots-born academic released from an Indonesian jail in February 2003 after spending five months there for alleged visa violations, used her five months in jail to continue her research into military and police corruption in Indonesia. McCulloch, who could have been free in November 2002 if she had been prepared to pay a $6,000 bribe, collected information from over 60 fellow prisoners while she was in detention on the bribes that they were obliged to pay police in return for a quick investigation, to prosecutors for a quick process and to judges for a lower sentence. She believes that her work is important not because she is a better researcher than others, but that she has been to places where others do not get to go and has gathered evidence first hand.
