Cancer research 'revived' by merger

Article Abstract:

Alex Markham, chief executive of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), has used an interview to quash rumours of culture clashes and cracks in the newly merged organisation. Markham claims that the February 2002 merger of the Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research, both charities, has been a success which has been achieved smoothly, on budget and on time. Markham's aim for CRUK, which is the third-largest biomedical research funding body in the UK, is to ensure that its science funding remains at the leading edge of international competitiveness.

Scientists want time to talk

Article Abstract:

Scientists should be given more time and greater rewards by their universities for communicating their subject to the public, according to speakers at the British Association for the Advancement of Science festival. It is contended that while many scientists have a flair for and commitment to communicating their ideas to people with no scientific background, too often they are forced to do this in their spare time as university timetables do not schedule such work.

UK ahead of rivals in technology transfer

UK university technology transfer is in good shape, despite a fall in the number of spin-off companies from UK universities and a global downturn, according to the UK University Commercialisation Survey for 2002. The survey reveals that the UK produced 50 spin-offs per US$1 bil invested in research, compared to 38 spin-offs/$1 bil in Canada and 15/$1 bil in the US.
