Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the argument that the ultimate weapons in the armoury of the US and USSR during the cold war were washing machines, refrigerators and other kitchen appliances - as exhibited in a then state-of-the-art electric kitchen in the American National Exhibition in Moscow, Russia, in 1959. It is suggested that this kitchen represented a third front in the cold war, which already had its arms race and space race, opening up the idea of a living-standards race, which the Americans would argue they were winning.

GM seeds of hope
Article Abstract:
The use of genetically modified (GM) crops in the third world should not be stopped just because Europe is hostile to the idea. It is argued that while people in Europe air their views about the rights and wrongs of GM crops, the most important point is being missed, namely that GM technology can help millions of small-scale farmers in the third world to grow enough to avoid malnutrition and have enough left over to provide some income.
