A national epic on two wheels

Article Abstract:

An analysis of how the Tour de France, a bicycle race regarded as one of the most gruelling competitions in all of sport, mirrors essential French character and values is made in the light of the impending 100th Tour de France. It is argued that as the Tour has progressed, it has put flesh on the bones of values taught in school in France - such as effort, determination, courage, endurance of pain and fair play - but which are seldom internalised, as well as introducing the people to commercial advertising and familiarising the people with their own national geography.

...think Bernard-Henry Levi is a pretender

Article Abstract:

The author of "BHL - A Biography" argues that Bernard-Henri Levy, the best known "media intellectual" in France, is in fact a pretender who has produced nothing of intellectual worth. It is contended that the French intellectual world needs to examine itself and why and how it has allowed Levy to attain his status in French intellectual society.
