A waste of good ideas

Article Abstract:

The UK often fails to take advantage of new ideas but it is not due to a lack of enterprise from British academics. Research has shown companies formed from innovations developed at universities are started at about the same rate in both US and UK universities. But British businessmen and industrialists are not keen to spend money on developing new ideas. A study looking into the effectiveness of US universities compared to those in Scotland in exploiting research found the Scottish universities where particularly good at developing spin-off companies for less investment.

Article Abstract:

Until recently many UK universities have confined their commercial operations to letting student residences and lecture halls for conferences.
