Taking the bull by the horns

Article Abstract:

There are growing calls for an inquiry into the UK handling of the BSE or mad-cow disease crisis since the late 1980s. The calls come as new evidence comes to light that there is almost certainly a link between BSE and fatal human illness new-variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Scientists believe that an inquiry could help establish how BSE arose in cattle and how it then crossed the species barrier. Many scientists believe that government ministers did not receive the right scientific advice, or the advice was misinterpreted, and they want to prevent this happening again.

Role models for the next generation

The Pupil Research Initiative programme in Britain has been running since Sep. 1994 to introduce secondary school pupils to post-graduate research students so that barriers can be broken down in perceived levels of required intelligence and studious attitudes. Approximately 500 post-graduate students are participating in the scheme, which is being managed by the Centre of Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University.
