In the eyes of the master

Article Abstract:

Columbia University Professor in Art History and Biographer Simon Schama points out Artist Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt reflected the darker side of life in his paintings. In his latest work, a biography of Rembrandt entitled 'Rembrandt's Eyes', Schama looks at how Rembrandt painted in conjunction with a history of his life. Schama's favourite work is the portrait of Jan Six which was painted in 1654. He points out the painting gives a true representation of a man yet includes a range of different brush strokes and painting techniques. The book is published on Oct. 28, 99.
