Chic young turks have a dream

Article Abstract:

Student leaders from universities across South Africa attending a student training conference in Durban, South Africa, highlighted the stress caused by the difficulties of juggling academic work and student representative council (SRC) work. University of Cape Town SRC Pres. Mzukisi Qobo explained that student leaders have to deal with everything from politics and administration to conflict resolution. The student leaders agreed that transformation, the process of making institutions more accessible, friendly and relevant to students, is the most urgent issue facing universities and students.

South Africa boosts its science

Article Abstract:

South Africa's Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (Thrip) aims to bring together the state, higher education and industry in order to broaden South Africa's research base and improve the country's competitive position. Thrip aims to help South Africa gain a leading position in niche areas of science, with this areas then being commercialized and producing new jobs and products. In 1997, spending on scientific research and training as part of Thrip totalled R150 million, and it is forecast that this could rise to half a billion rand by 2000-2001.

South Africa has one of the highest HIV rates in the world

Article Abstract:

The University of Pretoria is in the forefront of efforts by South African universities to tackle the social and economic effects of the HIV and Aids crisis in the country. The University's Centre for the Study of Aids has an HIV-Aids student outreach service, and offers staff training on Aids issues.
