Call for a degree of rivalry

Article Abstract:

Italian education experts feel the system of awarding all degrees the same legal value should not continue because it discourages the pursuit of excellence and competition between universities. Educational reform has not be found to be effective, with little guidance given to university staff. There is concern some 60% of Italian students fail to complete their chosen university courses. A degree allows the holder to apply for certain jobs in the public sector. There is no discrimination between degrees awarded from poor universities and those providing the highest quality of education.

Paul Ginsborg

Article Abstract:

English historian Paul Ginsborg of the University of Florence is a widely-respected authority on Italian history. His students perceive him as genuinely enthusiastic about his subject matter, with Ginsborg applauding his students for their intellectual passion. He believes Italian students consider education as an end in itself rather than as a means to a career. Ginsborg teaches his students that there are several historic similarities between the Balkan conflict and the 20th-century civil wars in Greece, Italy and Spain.
