Child of the 20th century

Article Abstract:

Universities in the US greatly changed following the 1950s. During the 1950s it was gradually recognized some groups had been discriminated against and freedom of speech had been curtailed. A major event occurred in the 1990s when Berkeley university agreed a contract worth $25 million with Novartis, directly linking research carried out in the College of Natural Resources and the chemical firm. The start of land-grant universities in the US had occurred in the 1860s followed by the creation of universities for special groups, such as Vassar College for women.

A twist in Estonia's history

Article Abstract:

Universities started to be set up in Europe in the 12th century, and they rapidly spread within Europe. They later extended as part of the expansion of European power, with Salamanca university, Spain, used as a model for many universities in Latin America. Dorpat university, Estonia, was originally set up when Estonia was under Swedish rule, and later came under Russian, and then German rule, before Russians returned in 1944. The university has been passed to the Estonian people.

Happiness is a sheathed gun

Article Abstract:

Violence in US high schools has prompted some observers to raise questions about the assumptions on which the high school system is based. Musician and Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, Pres Leon Botstein has suggested structural reforms to the high school system. He recommends that there should be no segregation at the age of 11, with sixth form or its equivalent, or direct entrance to another level of education, being available to all students.
