Chinese dragon's double vision

Article Abstract:

China wishes to develop a strong economy and a sense of nationhood, while also becoming integrated with the rest of the world. Higher education is one area where this double vision is evident, by which some institutions in the West are building partnerships and campuses in China, and China is also developing its key universities to utilize the knowledge of students coming back from the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.

Under radical new plans being considered by research councils, academics will have to prove the possible commercial worth of their research in order to improve chances of gaining funding. Panels would assess grant applications in terms of economic impact.
