Contest hots up for medical places

Article Abstract:

Winning a place at university in the United Kingdom to study to be a doctor is now harder than it has been for at least a generation, with university admissions officers reporting that they have turned away thousands of high-quality applicants this year due to the level of competition for places. Some medical schools are considering raising the standards that applicants have to reach in order to cope with the steady increase in applicants and it is unlikely that many medical schools will accept applicants with less that two As and a B at A level next year.

Place for books, bytes and e-sites

Article Abstract:

Lynne Brindley, chief executive of the British Library, takes umbrage with the traditional stereotype of the librarian as a mousy, desk-bound individual, arguing that in the changing environment of modern libraries, librarians need to have sharp business skills and a god understanding of technology and the Internet. Brindley's long term aim for the British Library is to make all of its current 150 million items available on demand to online users.
