Zionism thesis stirs up a storm

Article Abstract:

A controversial thesis by Reverend Stephen Sizer on the role of Christianity in the Middle East conflict has sparked a public row, with allegations that he has allowed political and religious beliefs to cloud academic judgements. Sizer's thesis attacks fundamentalist Christians in the USA who unequivocally support Israel and its policies, arguing that these fundamentalists are one of "the most powerful and destructive forces in America".

Ministers vilify researchers

Article Abstract:

The government is accused of undermining academe's 'vital independence' after academic critics revealed the extent to which politicians have gone to discredit them. Academics who have made headlines for research which challenghes government policies have been subjected to campaigns of 'vilification', have had their work rubbished and have faces personal critcism.

Students win payout for 'regrettable difficulties'

Article Abstract:

Sheffield University has offered to make over UKPd22,000 worth of "ex-gratia payments" to 41 students on a troubled masters degree course in translation studies. The university has offered to make the payments in the light of "regrettable difficulties experienced" on the course, including problems caused by the loss of a key staff member.
