Demand to explode but no new cash

Article Abstract:

Universities in the United Kingdom are set to be denied funding for additional places next year under a recommendation from the board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The move, which is expected to be repeated in the following year, casts doubt on the commitment of the government to reach its target of 50% participation in higher education by 2010 without reducing funding levels.

Issues relating to the arguments for and against top-up fees and differential fees for students in higher education in the UK are examined in an attempt to identify the issues that the UK government must address in its upcoming strategy paper on higher education.

Call to help needy students

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning ways in which students in financial difficulties can receive help are discussed. Particular attention is given to the publication of a report calling for the development of a bursary system to provide for the costs of maintenance and tuition.
