Devolution: not whether but when?

Article Abstract:

The debate on Scottish devolution started some years ago, and after several changes is now called the Scottish Constitutional Convention. It includes political parties (except the Conservative and Scottish National), local authorities, unions, churches and others. It has made proposals for a Scottish parliament. Edinburgh University's sociology department has become involved by organising conferences, although the Committee of University Principals only has observer status. Few academics are local councillors, although universities in Edinburgh have encouraged industry into the city.

Brown ruled uneasy court

Article Abstract:

Chancellor Gordon Brown's move to centre stage at Edinburgh university in the 1970s prompted an angry establishment backlash, according to newly released archive records. Mr Brown became the second student ever to be elected rector of Edinburgh University in 1972 and this included the right to chair the university's governing body. In 1974, senior university managers were recorded as wanting urgent legal powers to strip Mr Brown of his chairmanship.
