Did we jump or were we pushed?

Article Abstract:

The idea that Britain's imperial policy in the 100 years between Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1897 and Hong Kong's return to China in 1997 involved sponsoring and fostering a desire for independence among its colonial subjects is not entirely accurate. Indian independence in 1947 stemmed from the imminent collapse of the country's government, while a desire to reduce British commitments was behind the granting of independence to African states. Elections in British colonies were designed to ensure the continued co-operation of local people rather than pave the way for independence.
