Digital print and the pursuit of a perfect image

Article Abstract:

Digital art is now an established practice within fine art printmaking, despite the claim that fine art printmaking is only acceptable when executed entirely by hand. Objectors also maintain that digital art is a threat to the hands-on practice of painting, drawing and sculpting. This claim is unwarranted since only a tactile involvement with an object and with materials in the studio can deliver insights relating to content, form and visual language. However painters and sculptors can use new digital techniques to experiment with ideas, composition, shape and colour.

In search of the perfect image

Article Abstract:

The Digital Library Initiative, a four-year, $24 million research programme sponsored by three US government agencies, is designed to build information resources of all kinds in digital form and make them available anywhere at any time, through interconnected networks and systems. The six universities involved in the programme are carrying out research into a variety of issues. They also exchange tools and undertake joint experiments since interoperability, the ability of different systems to talk to each other, is central to the building of digital libraries.

An East Coast visionary with a bit of an image problem

Article Abstract:

An examination of Susan Sontag and her work is made in the light of a Times Higher Education Supplement-sponsored lecture at the Edinburgh Festival and the publication of her latest book, "Regarding the Pain of Others". It is argued that for Sontag, being a writer gives her permission to question the world, but that perversely in her critique of photography she asks too little and accepts too much.
