Do they deserve to be degrees?

Article Abstract:

Plans by the UK government to increase the number of university places, introduce top-up fees and relax the rules on which institutions can award degrees has resurrected a long-running debate over so-called "Mickey Mouse" courses. Many argue that the introduction of degrees in non-traditional subjects, such as surfing and hairdressing, demonstrates that universities are simply cashing in on the government's 50% participation target by offering courses with little academic credibility or intellectual content.
