LMU aims to develop higher education in the vicinity of Harrogate while also aiming to diversify and expand its provision of further education. The lecturers' union Natfhe is concerned about the employment conditions of lecturers after new degree courses become available in Harrogate in Sep 1997. Harrogate College was concerned over its vulnerability and so approached LMU after LMU abandoned its original plan to seek an alliance with Airedale and Wharfedale College near Leeds.

Whither weather?

Article Abstract:

The storms that killed seven people in one night in Feb. 1997 followed the driest January in England and Wales since 1769. This was in line with the pattern of wide departures from the normal seasonal variations observed by Dr Terry Marsh of the Institute of Hydrology over the past eight years. Professor of geography Tim Burt explains that the unusual fluctuations from very wet to very dry periods are a sign of global warming. The stormy weather proved invaluable for meteorologists monitoring the development of storms over the Atlantic in an attempt to improve weather forecasting.
