Dons take lessons in lecturing

Article Abstract:

Most lecturers starting their first jobs in autumn 1995 will be required to attend compulsory courses in teaching as students become more critical of the quality of what British universities provide. Graham Wynn, a new lecturer in astrophysics at Leicester University felt that the two-day course in teaching he attended was very good but is less daunted by teaching than by finding the time to do research. New Southampton University economics lecturer Philip Evans is confident that he can handle the teaching but is worried about being able to publish sufficient research to secure a permanent post.

Sex on the brain

Article Abstract:

Research by scientists and social scientists into the way men and women's brains work has highlighted the difficulty of specifying the respective roles of nature and nurture in determining the differences in male and female behaviour. Professor of psychology in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, Ruben Gur has discovered that men's brains age faster than those of women. Research by social scientist at the University of Michigan Jacquelynne Eccles suggests that parents' expectations of their children is a major factor in boys generally being better at math than girls.
